It’s important to keep your house drain clean to prevent them from clogging. A clogged rain downspout will mean overflowing, and that can cause damage to your home exterior, landscaping, channels and foundation. So clean your drain downspout at least twice a year to prevent damage to your house. Here we will show you how to unclog a downspout drain. So let’s get started with it!

Downspout Drain

Clean the Downspout from the Bottom Opening Side

Remove the downspout extension to expose the bottom opening. It is especially important if the downspout is connected to an underground drain system. Otherwise, trying to remove the clog may push it further down.

With your hand gloves, insert a garden trowel tool into the downspout and remove any debris or leaves you can reach. Wash the downspout extension from a garden hose to dislodge debris caught here as well.

Wash the Downspout from the Top Opening Side

If you haven’t cleaned your downspout drain channels yet, do this first, finishing with unclogging the drain downspout.

Climb a sturdy ladder at the end of a garden hose. When you reach on the top of the downspout drain, turn on the water. If water flows out carrying debris with it, then your work is complete. However, if water backs up into the drainage channel, a clog is present in the downspout, and you must remove it.

Tips to Unclog a Downspout Drain

1. Tap on the Side of the Downspout

Walk down the ladder one level at a time, gently knocking on the side of the downspout pipe. Then, climb back up and try washing the downspout with the garden hose.

2. Create a Seal

Pack a small cloth into the top of the downspout and then insert the garden hose and turn on the water. The created seal may be enough to force the blockage out of the bottom opening.

3. Use a Handheld Auger

Wearing the hand gloves and eye protection glass, feed the Auger into the top or the bottom downspout opening and turn the drum clockwise. Once it’s all the way through, pull the cable back. You may need to do this several times to remove the clog completely from the channels.

4. Use a Power Tool

Insert the end of a leaf blower, pressure washer or wet/dry Vac into the top of the downspout opening side. These tools should be able to dislodge stubborn debris.
